In my student teaching at Lexington, I was able to dive into the relationship between the people of South America and the physical world around them. For example, the majority of the people in South America live along the coastal areas because the Amazon region is difficult to settle in. Also, the Andes Mountains caused people to settle in separate areas which led to many different tribes and languages developing prior to the arrival of the Spanish. During our unit, the students and I were able to get really acquainted with the ways that South Americans benefit from the natural resources available to them as well as an understanding of how people around them try to exploit the region for some goods. One group in my class did a presentation on illegal logging in the Amazon rainforest in which indigenous tribes were using gps systems and other security devices to track people coming in and extracting timber from their land.
During Internship B, at Irmo, I taught the students about Globalization in the framework of the culture unit in order to illustrate to them the way in which electronic media has made the diffusion of popular culture much easier. In the artifact below, I have shown a few of the slides from my lesson on Globalization that illustrate TV, internet, and social media as the greatest tools for diffusion of culture and global connections between people, places, and environments around the world. The students were most able to relate to the social media portion of the lesson in that the majority of the students have instagram accounts and snapchat accounts as well. Through these social media outlets and others, students understand that they are able to connect with people, places, and environments. Within the artifact are three separate world maps showing the spread of TV use from 1950-2005, spread of internet usage from 1995 - 2010, and the spread of twitter users from 2005-present. This helps the student understand the ease in which they can connect to countries and people around the world.
