When taking the SOCY 705 class with Dr. Weber, my entire outlook in my own individual development and identity was changed forever. I learned to look at the world with social justice in mind and began to see the immense amount of privilege that I was born into in my life which has helped me where some have been held back systematically. One of the first things we learned in that class was the ability to understand each other’s differences. We had to agree on a belief that even in disagreements that we should assume that all people mean well and only hold opinions based on how they have been socially constructed to this point. I think this is a key to having good discussions in the classroom going forward when discussion difficult topics. In the artifact for this strand, I will post the "Guidelines for Classroom Discussion" from Dr. Lynn Weber's Socy 705 class. In the document, it is important to notice that part of the understanding is that there are systems of oppression that exist in the world today. Understanding this and being able to first examine the individual position in society helps students realize the ways in which intersectionality is so complex. I feel that this is one of the most important thing for teachers to learn when going into the classroom in order to appreciate the diversity within the world, the U.S., South Carolina, our schools, and finally inside the very classrooms that we work in. In my Geography Class at Irmo, before doing research on the different world religions and having in depth conversations about these religions, I posted this artifact to Google Classroom and went over it with my class in order to help them understand how healthy discussions take place when discussing difficult topics such as religion within the classroom setting. I was very proud of my students ability to understand this and keep in mind the differences between them as well as others around the school and make connections, not only to the topic of religion within our classroom, but also the ways in which this concept of intersectionality and social justice can be used throughout the school as well as outside of the school. In all reality, this document of understanding helped construct a more healthy environment where equality within the classroom could thrive.
